An evening is coming in

It is late afternoon on the Basingstoke Canal in Surrey, England near my home. The boat owner is home, the stove is on. Cosy. Who sees the canal is icing over? Who sees an evening coming in? Inspired by the celebrated English poet Philip Larkin's poem "Going".
