This landscape is a beautiful evocation of incredibly strong sunlight and deep shade. Inspired from a summer stroll around Painshill Park during a heatwave. Painshill Park in Cobham, Surrey is a wonderful 18th century landscape park, "where the walk is a work of art". The title comes from the last words of ‘Stonewall Jackson’, a confederate general in the American Civil War: “Let us cross the river and rest under the shade of the trees”. He was killed by friendly-fire. The sun is like that: it gives us pleasant warmth but sometimes it turns and we sweat on baking days and one day in a billion years it will burn up our planet.
